The University Babeș-Bolyai (UBB) is the largest and most prestigious higher education institution in Romania, organized in three lines of study (Romanian, Hungarian and German), which has in its structure 21 faculties, totaling 102 departments and research units, as well as 12 university extensions. UBB, through its programmes, educates about 44 000 students. At the Bachelor’s level, 31,678 students are enrolled, of which 23,694 are studying in Romanian, 4,684 in Hungarian, 760 in German, 2,329 in English and 211 in French. At Master’s level there are 7,866 students enrolled. In addition, UBB offers doctoral and post-doctoral programmes through its 28 doctoral schools, which cover 31 fields and teach 1,274 doctoral students.
The Faculty of European Studies (FEE) started its activity in 1993 and offers bachelor, master and doctoral programmes in Romanian, English, French and German, especially in the field of international relations and European studies, but also in European administration and management. There are now 1200 students in the Faculty, 10% of which are from abroad, plus Erasmus students from a network of 86 universities. The master programmes, of which the following are mentioned : European Affairs and Project Management, Comparative European Political Studies (in French), Cultural Diplomacy and International Relations (in English), are internationalised and conducted in partnership with institutional actors from the private, public and non-governmental fields. European projects, financed by the European Commission or the structural funds, support education at Master and Bachelor level and offer graduates competitive career prospects.
The Faculty includes the European Research Institute, with international researchers, whose aim is to lead research projects in niches of excellence in the field of European integration, international relations, EU policies etc. FEE also hosts a Centre for European Information and Documentation in the Europe-Direct network, 3 Jean Monnet Chairs and a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence. Within the framework of the Jean Monnet Actions, the European Commission supports in particular the organisation of conferences on disintegration and integration in Central and Eastern Europe. Research on the integration of Central and Eastern Europe into the EU is supported by the Liaison Group of Historians to the European Commission, in which the EEF is represented.
